What happened to Omegle?

From 2009 onwards, Omegle was the site that popularised the idea of "random chat with a stranger". Its founder, Leif K-Brooks, announced that he had permanently shut the site down in November 2023. He cited abusive use becoming impossible to control, along with the financial and psychological burden of keeping the platform running.

That shutdown really sums up the core problem with random chat: without identity verification and moderation, the model can't survive for long. So the first thing to look at when choosing an alternative isn't "how easily can I get in" but "who can get in, and how is abuse prevented".

• Is the camera mandatory? There should be a voice/text-only option for people who don't want to share video.
• How much of your personal data is public? Details like email, date of birth and gender should be hidden from other users.
